How to Play The Local: Choose Your Sport
The Local is a drinking card game you play while watching live sport. Events in the match tell you when to play your cards and score points. Choose the edition for the sport on screen, get 2β6 adults together and keep the rules card nearby. Alcohol is optional.
Choose the right edition
| The sport you watch | Choose this game |
|---|---|
| Australian rules footy | Aussie Rules β The Local |
| Rugby League | Rugby League β The Local |
| T20 cricket | T20 Cricket β The Local |
Each deck follows events from its own sport. If you are buying a gift and they call it βfootyβ, check which code they mean. The Rugby League edition is for league, rather than Rugby Union. The cricket edition is designed around T20.
How to play
- Deal five cards each. Put the remaining deck in the middle and keep your cards where you can see them.
- Watch the match. Look for the events on the cards in your hand as they happen in the broadcast.
- Play the card and score. When its event happens, follow the card, set it aside and count the points shown.
- Draw a new card. Keep following the action. The player with the most points at the end wins.
This is the quick-start overview. Use the rules card supplied with your edition for the full instructions and scoring details.
What comes in the box?
- 100 game cards and a rules card.
- A game for 2β6 players aged 18 and over.
- Sport-specific events to follow during the match.
You need the matching sports broadcast and your group. There is no app to install. A game is usually around two hours, depending on the match and how long you play.
Can you play without alcohol?
Yes. Play for the card points with non-alcoholic drinks, or play for points only. Everyone can choose their own pace and whether to drink.
Which game makes a good gift?
Start with the sport the person actually watches. The Local suits a dad, partner or mate who likes getting people together for a match. You do not need a clothing size or their team's colours.
